A Trail Runners Paradise:

With more marked paths, tracks and trails to last a lifetime, the Portes du Soleil is a genuine trail and mountain runners paradise, with some areas matching the vert and steepness of the Chamonix Valley. There is enough variety to keep every level of trail runner happy, from some of the extremes of vert and difficulty around the Dents du Midi area, to much more mellow inclined forest tracks and paths in and around Chatel. Single track, double track, technical ups and downs, it is all here, along with spectacular scenery.

Famous races close by include the Trail Dents Du Midi, Sierre-Zinal, Marathon du Mont Blanc and UTMB...

A Personal View:

I'd hardly run a step since university, so if someone had said just a few years ago, that my favourite sport would now involve running and hiking up mountains for fun, then I would have not believed them. We moved to Chatel at the end of one summer and exercise involved taking the dog for a walk, often in the lower half of the Barbossine area, just above Petit Chatel.

Winter Trail Running... There Is More Than You Think!:

Although most mountain trails are closed in winter for safety reasons, there are options for those who are keen to run all year round. The Chatel area has marked snow shoe trails, some of which are on existing paths and these often provide a compact running surface which is sometimes a better surface than summer. Having the right footwear and timing of the run is often the key to a successful winter trail run.. << click here to read more >>
