Trail Running In The Châtel Area:

Local Trail Races

By local, we mean within about an hour and a half from Chatel.

We have experience of most of the races listed below - either by taking part, being a crew or supporter, or just as a spectator...

The list is in a rough chronological order but note there are other races which we may have missed...

Torgon Trail:

One of the first races on the trail running calendar, this race has grown in size in the last couple of years since it has been organised by the team behind the Swiss Peaks races. The 2021 edition saw elite runners such as Maude Mathys and Caroline Chaverot taking part.

The race is usually in late May and has 12k, 20k and 30k distances with plenty of vert.

Part of the course comes up towards the Chatel and La Chapelle ski areas.

Sierre Zinal:

A famous race and one of the oldest mountain races in the world. This is another Golden Trail Series event with alot of elite runners. The elites start at a different time to the recreational runners, so it is possible to be finishing a race at the same time as someone like Kilian Jornet or Maude Mathys. The race starts down in Sierre in the Rhone Valley of Switzerland and ends up in the lovel mountain village of Zinal, 31km and 2200m of ascending later. The final descent into Zinal is steep and brutal, with large crowds to greet the runners as they enter the village.

Humani Trail:

One of our favourite races! Usually held towards the end of September every 2 years in Les Diablerets, Switzerland...

"Humani'Trail in Les Diablerets is a real gathering between the Alps and the Himalayas: In addition to 4 Trail routes with a 100% alpine flavour, the registration fees are donated to finance charitable projects in Nepal for disadvantaged children - more than 200,000 Swiss francs in 6 editions, 30 children in school and a fantastic dual objective for each of the runners.
4 races using the wildlife of Nepal are proposed. Each animal will perfectly represents characteristics of the course : wild and …uncompromising :
With at the start, in addition to 1,500 participants from around thirty countries, two former UTMB winners, a winner of the Diagonale des Fous or a World Champion, the Humani'Trail proved that it was possible to offer a real sporting challenge while bringing humanity so close to the values of the trail."
