Day 43 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 3...

Weather & Snow Report:

It has been mostly dry since the earlier updates, with one or two flakes of snow, but nothing to bring any further dustings. There have been some sunny intervals as the cloud comes and goes. It looks like being more of the same through the rest of the day and into this evening, with perhaps some flurries, but these are not expected to amount to anything. However, a cold night is expected and atmospheric conditions appear to be suitable for the snow making operation to restart.

Day 43 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

As mentioned, we have snow flurries affecting the area today, however, these are not expected to amount to very much, with further dustings likely with perhaps up to 1cm of snow, depending on the distribution of the flurries. Wind is not expected to be an issue in the immediate Chatel area today, though some higher elevations may see something a bit more noticeable this afternoon - but there is some uncertainty regarding this.

There is currently a normal temperature profile across the area, with no inversion, with values just below -2c at 1000m, -5c at 1800m and -7.5c at 2200m.

This morning's model runs suggest high pressure dominating until the end of the month, so the flakes of today may be the last for some time. There is no indication at the moment of when the next snowfalls will arrive, though as is often pointed out, the period beyond 5 to 7 days can change very quickly on the models.

Day 42 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Photos From Today...

Weather & Snow Report:

Beautiful weather again today, before cloud rolled in later in the afternoon.

Piste conditions were reported to be good again in the Linga and PLJ sector.

The first 3 photos below were from this afternoon's session. In contrast, the bottom 3 photos were from a jog in the Barbossine sector this morning and it was quickly apparent the reason for the closure of the L'Epervier red piste, which runs down to the Barbossine mid station, with grass and mud on a large area on the bottom of the piste. As mentioned previously, there was a meter of snow on this area in mid-December, which thawed by early January and was then brought back to life with the snowfalls of the 7th to 9th of January. Sadly, this piste will be starting from scratch again if it is to re-open and at the moment, there is no sign of significant snowfall before the end of January.

Tonight and tomorrow's flurries look like producing a dusting in the village, with perhaps a cm or two if things turn out favourably.

Chatel Snow Report: 19/01/2022: 8.00am

Day 42 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Morning Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel. Temperatures across the area are currently ranging from -7c at 1000m below Chatel, 2c at 1700m and 2.8c at Avoriaz, whilst the 2200m elevation is recording -1c. The 0c isotherm is expected to fall through today and come down below the village overnight, before popping up to 1000m tomorrow. Most of the today should be sunny, but cloud may arrive for this evening, with snow flurries possible anytime thereafter, into tonight and at times tomorrow. At the moment, a dusting appears to be the most likely result of any flurries or light snow showers, with a forecast range of 0cm to 5cm. Below are the Arome and Arpege forecast graphics for this period of flurries / showers.

There is expected to be a noticeable wind at some higher elevations today. Below is the graphic for gusts in kmh for midday today from the Arome model.

This morning's GFS model run shows the potential for some useful snowfall arriving in a weeks time, however, this doesn't look too convincing to me at the moment and the latest ECMWF model run shows high pressure dominating the weather out to 10 days. 10 days takes us almost to the end of the month, so there is the chance (and perhaps a grwoing chance), that it may be February before we see any significant snowfall.

As mentioned on previous updates, the snow on many key pistes remains plentiful, though there are exceptions and the sunny aspect pistes which rely on natural snow cover have come under pressure or have closed (eg on Barbossine). Some colder air arriving tonight may allow snow making to re-commence across the area. The network of snow cannon, which have seen some impressive upgrades in recent years (eg on the Stade at Linga), do produce large volumes of man made snow in short periods of time, so all these key pistes already look secure until the end of the season.

Day 41 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Afternoon Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

The weather has been stunning in Chatel again today with clear skies, mild sunshine, with cold temperatures in the shaded areas and fairly mild ones at altitude. For example the temperature rose to 5c at 2200m.

We are still expecting a little bit of snow tomorrow night and on Thursday, along with a general (but temporary) plummet in temperatures, but more on this on tomorrow's update. Beyond Thursday, there remains little sign of significant snowfall and today's model runs show the chance of high pressure dominating until the end of the month.

Chatel Snow Report: 18/01/2022: 8.05am

Day 41 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Morning Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel where we have another early morning temperature inversion in place across the area. Temperatures in the immediate valley area are as low as -9c, however it is 1c at 1800m and 3.5c at 2200m. There were some strong winds overnight at the highest elevations, but these have eased right down now and wind is not expected to be an issue today, on what looks like being another fine day on the ski area.

The latest model runs suggest the chance of some light snow showers affecting the area from tomorrow evening and into Thursday. Some charts during yesterday looked as though they would result in a slightly more useful snowfall, however, this morning's updates keep any snowfall in the 0cm to 5cm range, with a dusting perhaps the most likely looking scenario at this stage. A slightly more useful snowfall can still not be completely ruled out, but it is looking less likely. The front bringing the chance of snow showers will result in colder air arriving on Thursday, so another period of snowmaking across the ski area is likely, which will help to maintain the key pistes.

Day 40 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Photos From Today...

Weather & Snow Report:

The weather has been beautiful again here in Chatel today and the mountain was reported to be quiet and in good condition (with some exceptions as mentioned this morning).

Today we headed down the Dranse path down to and beyond La Chapelle and experienced the contrasts that are currently in place under the clear skies. Much of the route earlier this morning was in the shaded section by the river and was really in the deep freezer, as it has been for quite some time now. In contrast, the sunny aspect slopes above La Chapelle were showing the signs of the recent mild sunshine. At Cret Beni, there was loads of snow down in the nursery area and the steep red which comes back down to the station also appeared to have decent cover on it again (on the section which we could see). The path down the Dranse is well marked and there are various detours to keep you off the pisted cross country trails and we saw loads of snow shoers, cross country skiers, walkers, one or two joggers and loads of huskies too. The views were not bad either.

On the subject of Thursday's potential light snowfall, the scenario remains a similar one to the one discussed this morning, so a few cm's are looking possible. Can we squeeze 10cm out of this one? More on this on tomorrow morning's update.

Chatel Snow Report: 17/01/2022: 7.45am

Day 40 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Dry Spell Continues...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... temperatures currently range from below -8c in the immediate valley area to -3c at 1800m and -5.5c at 2200m. The 0c isotherm is expected to rise to around 1800m/1900m this afternoon. Although wind is not expected to be an issue today, there may be a noticeable breeze at some of the highest elevations during the day. The winds are expected to increase this evening and overnight, but are expected to have become light again by tomorrow lunchtime.

The weather is looking mostly fine for the first half of this week. This morning's models suggest the dry period continuing over the next 10 days, apart from this chance of a bit of snow on Thursday. The models, especially the GFS, have been fairly consistent in showing a light snowfall on this day, with something between 0cm and 5cm possible in the village. There remains a chance that this forecast range could go up a little, but there is also the chance that we may not see any snow at all. At the moment, it looks like having little impact on the general snow situation across the ski area.

The dry and sunny weather since the snowfalls of the 7th to the 9th, has had an impact on some pistes which are 100% natural snow, especially those with a sunny aspect. Both reds down to the mid station of Barbossine were listed as closed yesterday and others in the Morclan area are reported to be under pressure. The issue with these pistes was the fact that although they had a meter (or more) of snow on them in mid-December, the mild spell which lasted into the New Year stripped them of their cover, so some of these pistes were starting from scratch when the snowfalls of 10 days ago arrived. This left them in a vulnerable position and the mild sunshine of last week brought some renewed thawing. It is sad to see some closures in mid-January, however, pistes which have a mix of man made and natural snow are in a far better position and the snow cover is generally really good on many key pistes, especially at PLJ and Linga and on most pistes at Super Chatel. Some of these pistes have a good enough base to last to the end of the season.

Chatel Snow Report: 16/01/2022: 7.15am

Day 39 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Fine Today...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... where there is still a bit of an inversion this morning with air temperatures of -4.5c in the immediate valley area, 1c at 1800m and a touch below 0c at 2200m. The 0c isotherm is heading downwards today, so it may become a bit less mild in general in comparison to the warm sunshine of recent days. The 0c isotherm is ecpected to be between 1800m and 1900m by early afternoon.

Although not all the charts have come out yet this morning, the latest GFS model run continues its theme of the chance of a bit of snow next Thursday, along with some really cold temperatures, but the jury is still out on whether we will see any flakes. Last nights ECMWF showed that there could be a dusting, so at the moment, something in the range of 0cm to 5cm is possible in the village. As mentioned previously, there remains a chance that this scenario could be enhanced if there was a bit of a westward shift in the pattern, or an eastwards shift would mean a drier scenario - but it is still too early to say which way it is heading. Apart from that, there is little sign of snowfall until the back end of the month.

Although wind is not expected to be an issue today, there may be a noticeable breeze at some of the highest elevations this morning. Overnight gusts touched 50kmh at 2200m, with a recent gust of 31kmh being recorded (7.10am), but the forecast trend is downwards during the day.

Day 38 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Sunshine Continues...

Weather & Snow Report:

It is another mild and sunny day here in Chatel with 10c recorded at Avoriaz this afternoon, with the shaded sides of the mountain remaining sub zero. The early pistes were reported to be in great condition, after the overnight grooming, though it did get busier quite quickly today and the Linga car park was full before 11am. Photos below from earlier this morning.

As for snowfall, the GFS 6z model run showed a similar theme to its earlier output, with the chance of a dusting later next week, however, for any useful snowfall, it still appears as though plenty of patience is going to be required. There will be more on this on tomorrow morning's update when we will see if that dusting is still showing or whether it has been enhanced, or extinguished.

Day 38 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... where there is another big temperature inversion across the area this morning, with -6c at 1000m down in the valley below Chatel, but it is closer to 6c at 1800m and 2200m. The air should become colder at those higher elevations for a time over the coming days, but today should see another spring-like day in the sunshine on those sunny aspect slopes. In contrast, the shaded slopes and areas will remain in the freezer. Wind is not expected to be an issue today across the ski area, so it should be a great day up there!

High pressure is still expected to dominate the weather for quite some time. The high will probably be centred close to Britain next week. Some charts since yesterday evening again show a bit of a close shave next week in terms of snow, with the high moving far enough east to allow colder air, with a bit of snowfall to move down from the north next Thursday. However, this looks like being more relevant for the NE and E Alps, so the chances of any useful snowfall in this area are low at the moment. Having said that, as this is 5 days away, it is a scenario to be kept an eye on, and any westward adjustment to the pattern could improve the situation, but a slight eastward correction is also plausible, extinguishing any chance of a few flakes.

For those looking for the chances of useful or significant fresh snowfall, the next period of interest is during the last few days of this month.

Chatel Snow Report: 14/01/2022: 3.10pm

Day 37 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

It is a beautiful afternoon here in Chatel and feels very spring-like in the sunshine. Temperatures in the valley shade remain sub zero, however, the weather stations are recording 7.5c at 1680m and 8c at 1800m, which is fairly toasty for this time of year under clear skies. As mentioned this morning, the fine weather is here to stay for the next week at least, if the latest models are to be believed, with the closing days of January perhaps a period of interest for the next snowfalls.

Today's excursion was on foot, as part of an effort to try and regain the lost fitness of the last few weeks due to injury and illness. Therefore, I headed up to Mouet in the warm sunshine and followed the cat track up, which was in perfect winter condition for trail running (if you have the right footwear). It was quiet up there, though I did pass a few snow shoe-ers on the descent to the village.

Chatel Snow Report: 14/01/2022: 8.20am

Day 37 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel on a day when visitors from the UK will be allowed into France again, after the relaxing of the restrictions which have been in place since before Christmas. Those coming in today and over the coming days, will find some very decent snow conditions across the ski area. The exceptions to this will be on those sunnier aspect slopes in areas which have no man made some capability. After the very snowy first half of December, the milder period stripped most of the snow on the sunny slopes of Barbossine, so the snow of last weekend, although it came in significant quantities, will be thinning readily in parts of that sector. There was evidence of this yesterday and we spotted some browner areas appearing lower down on L'Epervier. Elsewhere, there should be few issues, with some pretty good mid January conditions, with some excellent cover on some pistes and there is even some powder still to be found in some spots, which the clear skies of this week have helped to maintain.

This morning, we have another temperature inversion in place with -7c in the immediate valley area, but it is above 0c at 1800m and 2200m. It looks like being another beautiful day, and another day of noticeable contrasts. It should feel warm in the sunshine today as the 0c isotherm will be at high elevations, however, those shaded slopes and valley areas will remain in the freezer. Wind is not expected to be an issue today, with light winds across the majority of the Chatel ski area.

Chillier air may infiltrate the area at times again over the next week, however, the latest charts this morning continue to show a high pressure dominated theme for the next 7 to 10 days. Some charts come close to allowing in an incursion from the north next week, but there is nothing convincing at the moment to suggest a pattern change is on the way. Patience will be needed for those always on the hunt for fresh snowfall, as this appears a stubborn pattern to shift.

Day 36 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

The weather has been beautiful today and it feels noticeably warmer in the sunshine, however, slopes less affected by the sunshine have retained cold and dry snow conditions in some areas. Sunny aspect slopes, which rely solely on natural snow cover, such as L'Epervier on Barbossine, are already coming under pressure. Most other pistes across the area have very good coverage, especially those which have benefitted from a mix of natural and man made snow.

Travel:

Great news today with the lifting of travel restrictions for those coming from the UK. This has been discussed on the WhatsApp group all day.

Chatel Snow Report: 13/01/2022: 8.05am

Day 36 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update ...

Weather & Snow Report:

It is another clear start to the day with cold temperatures in the immediate valley area (-11c at 1000m), but it is an inversion situation and temperatures at 1800m to 2200m are currently above 2c. It looks like being a day of contrasts across the area, with the sunny slopes feeling milder and the shaded slopes and valley areas remaining in the freezer. Wind is not expected to be an issue today.

The model runs this morning are showing high pressure continuing to dominate the weather for some time to come, with both the GFS and ECMWF models suggesting dry conditions out to 10 days. These extended outlooks can chop and change, so uncertainty levels are always generally high beyond 5 to 7 days, however, there is no sign of snowfall on these latest updates.

Day 35 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

The weather has remained cold and clear today, with a noticeable wind at some of the highest elevations again.

This morning saw an excursion on foot to Col de Saix along the snow shoe trails, which were in great condition, with cold and dry snow. There was some wind around the half way station of the Barbossine chairlifts, which was an indication of what was happening higher up, however, the sunshine felt pleasantly warm for the time of year.

This afternoon, a short session on the ski area took us up Linga and down the Combes. Snow conditions were generally much harder than recent days, with more in the way of scraped and icier areas showing up on some of the steeper sections of the pistes, with loose and dry snow in patches and to the edges of the pistes. There were still some nice sections to be found, but the best of the piste conditions today would have been earlier in the day, after the overnight grooming. On the Linga side, in the cold and shade, it was a similar story, with generally harder and compacted cannon snow in many areas. The snow cannon were still operating on the Stade, where a temeprature inversion meant it was still -6c in the shade!

Tomorrow should see lighter winds at those highest elevations and it should feel milder in the sunshine, with the daytime 0c isotherm creeping upwards.

Travel:

It sounds as though the travel restrictions between the UK and France will be eased in the coming days. This is something we are keeping a close eye on in the WhatsApp group.

Chatel Snow Report: 12/01/2022: 8.10am

Day 35 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel, where temperatures are really cold in the valley this morning, down at -13c! Higher up, the weather is still cold enough for snow making at some elevations, however, there is an inversion, with the current temperature at Avoriaz being close to 0c and it is only a touch below that at 2200m. There is some wind at the highest elevations this morning, with the weather station at 2200m above Avoriaz recording a gust of 100kmh overnight and a more recent gust of 56kmh from the NE!

This morning's models all appear to show high pressure dominating the weather for some time and the position of the high next week does not look favourable for the scenario shown by the GFS model yesterday, with any very cold and snowy weather pushed away far to the east. In fact, this morning's GFS model run is dry out to 10 days, as is the ECMWF. There is a chance that the area of high pressure could behave in a different way to what is being shown this morning, and scenarios with the high retrogressing eastwards, allowing in something from our north, could still pop up in the models. But, the message this morning, is that despite those glimpses yesterday, there remains no convincing sign of significant snowfalls in the next 7 to 10 days. Instead, we will have plenty of sunshine and some lovely conditions to satisfy most of those visiting the area.

Next Update:

Chatel Snow Report: 11/01/2022: 5.40pm

Day 34 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

Clear skies again here in Chatel today, with cold temperatures meaning that there was snow making going on across the area and the really rather good snow conditions will have been preserved. It is cold in the valley at the moment, with -8c currently showing a short distance down the valley from Chatel - but - the air higher up is now starting to turn less cold and it is just below -2c at 2200m. The lights of the snow making machinery are again visible on Linga.

This morning, it was mentioned that snow was unlikely in the net 10 days. However, the GFS model 6z chart update had other ideas and had a different evolution going forward, with high pressure developing towards Greenland / Iceland. This would allow low pressure to move down its eastern flank, bringing cold and snow towards the Alps in about 7 days time. The latest 12z model run shows a similar scenario - so there is now a bit more interest in the charts for those always looking for fresh snow. If this trend continues on tomorrow morning's updates, which includes the ECMWF model, then we could be looking at the next potential snowfall.

Chatel Snow Report: 11/01/2022: 8.00am

Day 34 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Cold Start / Fine Weather...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel where it is a fine start to the day and the snow making operation has been continuing since late yesterday afternoon. Temperatures are a chilly -11c in the immediate valley area and around -7c at both 1800m and 2200m. A mostly sunny day is expected and wind is not expected to be an issue, with perhaps a bit of breeze at the very highest elevations of the PDS ski area.

High pressure is set to be in charge of the local weather for some time to come. Daytime temperatures will be edging upwards during the rest of the week and into the weekend, so, there is expected to be more of a temperatures inversion scenario developing and it will gradually becoming milder on the sunny aspect slopes during the day, though shaded slopes and valley areas will remain deeply frozen under mostly clear skies. The 0c isotherm may be at 3000m on Thursday, so it should feel really pleasant in the sunshine in the village. Some charts suggest a colder feed of air returning next week, with the 0c isotherm plumetting again, but it still looks like staying dry. At the moment, there are no convincing signs of fresh snow within the next 10 days.

Next Update:
Later today.

Chatel Snow Report: 10/01/2022: 4pm

Day 33 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Blue Skies Return...

Weather & Snow Report:

The sunshine returned this morning to bring some fantastic conditions to the Chatel ski area, with wonderful piste conditions and enough fresh snow to satisfy those who venture off piste. There was some breeze higher up today, which brought some wind chill early this morning and the higher peaks of the area, such as the Dents, had snow streaming off them due to the high winds.

We vistied the Barbossine area today, which was largely deserted this morning. The 2 reds back to the mid-station are now back up and running after the fresh snow. We stopped for a coffee at about 11.30 at Chalet Theo, and we were the only ones there when we left towards 12.

We are now entering a high pressure dominated, dry period, as discussed this morning. There is a chance that the dry spell could continue out to 10 days, if some of today's charts are to be believed, however, the outlook can change on those charts quite quickly when talking about periods beyond 5 to 7 days - so we shall just have to see how this one pans out. But, more snow is currently off the agenda, which is a bit of shame in some ways, but it is difficult to complain after the weekend snowfalls and the wonderful weather of today.

Chatel Snow Report: 10/01/2022: 7.10am

Day 33 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel where there has been a bit more snow since the last update with another 4cm of powder recorded. It is now drier and that looks about it for the latest series of snowfalls. The village has received just under 30cm of fresh snow since Friday afternoon and 40cm since the 5th.

Temperatures are currently around -3c in the village area, -8c at 1800m and -10.5c at 2200m. Some wind is expected again at higher elevations, especially this afternoon, bringing a noticeable wind chill. Below is the wind gust forecast graphic from www.meteociel.fr.

High pressure is set to be in charge for the rest of this week, with the daytime 0c isotherm creeping up above the village from tomorrow. Therefore, from Wednesday, we will see a period of temperature inversion conditions developing, with those sunny slopes becoming mild in the daytime sunshine. Shaded slopes and valley areas will remain in the freezer with some cold valley nights and the pistes will see overnight re-freezes. The dry period looks like lasting 7 days at least, according to the latest charts.

Day 32 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 4...

Weather & Snow Report:

A period of snow this afternoon brought an additonal 5cm of powder to our measuring surface, bringing the total for these snowfalls in the village since yesterday evening to 18cm and 25.5cm since Friday afternoon. The precipitation radar suggests further areas of snow could affect this area during the evening and overnight periods. There is the chance of another 10cm here in the village - with again a range from 5cm to 15cm, depending on the luck of this shower lottery scenario.

Current temperatures range from -1.5c in the immediate valley area, to -6c at 1800m and -9c at 2200m.

Day 32 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 3...

Weather & Snow Report:

There have been a couple of snow showers since the earlier update and these brought another couple of cm's to the area. Another band of snow arrived a few minutes ago and will likely add a bit more. Will update accumulations later today.

This morning's trip to the ski area ended up being solely on the Linga side, with enough fresh to make it a really good session. You could feel the bottom at times, but there were fresh tracks to be had. There were some gusts coming through at the top of the Linga telecabine, however, we did not head up any further today, as there was plenty to occupy us in other areas, but it looked windy at the top.

Further snow showers are likely to move into the area this afternoon and tonight and there looks like there is a chance of another 10cm or so in the village, with a range from 5cm to 15cm. It all depends on if we get lucky with any beefier showery bands. The precipitation radar images show that there is a chance of this. Will update accordingly.

Day 32 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

There does appear to have been some breeze in the night, so I've seen a variety of snow depths this morning, with 11cm to 12cm on our measuring surface, but 9cm to 10cm on our vehicle's roof. I'm calling it 11cm at 7am. After shovelling some snow, it seems that the fresh accumulations here in the village are a fairly heavy mix of snow and graupel and is perhaps a reflection of the less cold temperatures which arrived for a time overnight, though what is falling now will add some powder.

So far, the snowfall is a bit under expectations but it has started snowing again since 7am. The precipitation radar looks like it is a shower lottery scenario, therefore how much more we get will depend on whether we strike lucky with any of the more potent areas of precipitation. This showery scenario, with the chance of a more organised area of snowfall at some stage, looks like continuing on and off through today and overnight into early Monday. Amounts of additional accumulations are highly uncertain.

It is very windy higher up early this morning, but the winds are forecast to ease at times, however, there could still be some fairly strong gusts in the area during the day. The Arome wind gust chart for midday is below.

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel where it has been snowing and breezy during the night. As mentioned yesterday, there was a spell of milder air overnight with the temperature rising to 2c at by 2am at 1000m, however, temperatures are now sub-zero again and are around -2c in the village area, -6c at 1800m and -9c at 2200m. Day 31 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... More Snow Tonight...

Weather & Snow Report:

There have been one or two flakes coming down late this afternoon, with the main band of precipitation just to the west of Geneva. The Arome model suggests some useful accumulations overnight, with the snow only graphic suggesting 20cm higher up and 10cm to 15cm in the village, with the snow and graupel forecast suggesting 30cm higher up and 20cm in the village. One thing to note is that the theoretical 0c isotherm level may come up to the village for a time tonight, before easing down to 900m by 7am tomorrow. Strong winds are expected on the ski area overnight, with gales at the higher elevations and the winds may still be strong enough at 9am to perhaps be borderline disruptive in terms of some lifts opening on time.

It should be an interesting night and as always, the figures above could be surpassed, or they could prove to be over optimistic. The broader brush Arpege mosel suggests 20cm to 30cm across the area - so fingers crossed for a good outcome.

Day 31 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

It has been a dry day so far here in Chatel, though it has remained mostly cloudy. It was windy above 1800m this morning, with blowing snow higher up and there was a really cold feel. Piste conditons were varied and we found some lovely stuff on Linga, however, other areas were not as good, especially those which had seen some scouring from the wind. Although we did not venture into Avoriaz, we were told that conditions on the Chatel side were much better. So, a general description today could be a few cm's of powder on a very hard base, with some icy patches. It still appears reasonably busy too. It is cold, with temperatures currently a touch below 0c at 1000m in the valley and -6c at 1800m.

The latest precipitation radar images suggest the next batch is currently in a line from Lyon up to Metz and this should arrive by this evening. There will be a look at the latest accumulation forecasts early this eve.

Day 31 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel where there has some fresh snow overnight in the village, with 7.5cm of powder on our vehicle's roof this morning, so that is 6.5cm since late yesterday afternoon. Temperatures are currently ranging from close to -3c in the immediate valley area to -7.5c at 1800m and close to -11c at 2200m. Avalanche blasting has been heard this morning.

There are one or two flakes of snow falling at the moment, however, snow flurries rather than persistent snow are expected today, and these are not expected to add much to the existing cover. It will be the evening and overnight periods tonight which see more in the way of snowfall. The latest preciptation radar images also suggest this, with very little incoming in the morning period. Winds may be noticeable at the highest elevations today, bringing a wind chill, with gales likely up there overnight. The strong winds could cause a delayed opening on Sunday, however, the models suggest the wind easing down during Sunday morning.

Below are some charts from www.meteociel.fr to show some possibilities for amounts of snow by early on Sunday. These include the cm's which have fallen since midnight. Further snowfall is expected before Monday morning, but more on that on subsequent updates.

Day 30 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... A Light Snowfall So Far...

Weather & Snow Report:

It is cold and the snow cannon was working on the nurery area down in Abondance. It is currently between -7c and -8c at 1800m and -2c in the village. The flakes have got a little bit bigger in the last few minutes.

Day 30 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Cold Start... Snow On The Way...

Weather & Snow Report:

It is a cold start to the morning here in Chatel and tempertures are -8c a short distance down the valley and are around -6c at 2200m, so there is a hint of an inversion. There was a period of very colourful skies earlier - see the photo below.

Snowfall is incoming today, with the cloudier conditions expected to roll in during the morning and the weather will potentially close in later in the morning and into the early afternoon with light snowfalls arriving. Thereafter, snow is expected to fall on and off tonight and through the weekend, with drier interludes in the mix, but also periods with heavier snowfall. Below are the charts from the hi-res Arome model, with some comparisons from the more broad brush Arpege model. The Arpege model suggests significant snowfall by Monday - it may be overplaying the amounts, as a chunck of its snowfall is on Monday - but it is a possible scenario.

Today is not expected to be as windy as yesterday on the ski area, with light winds this morning, but a noticeable breeze may pick up as the afternoon goes on at those higher and exposed elevations.

Travel:

The French government relaxed the rules for travel to France from the UK for some professional reasons, however, we still wait for the relaxing of restrictions for those travelling to second homes here and those coming on holiday. The expectation is that there will be an announcement on Wed or Thurs of next week, however, this is not confirmed and any announcement could come before then or after then.

Day 29 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Dry Today But More Snow On The Way...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel, where it is a cold and clear start to the day and the lights of the snow making cannon could be seen twinkling on Linga ealier. The overnight snow making is welcome and this is likely to be added to by some natural snow over the coming days too. Current temperatures are ranging from about -6c to -11 from top to bottom across the ski area, highlightling the welcome return of winter conditions to the area after the recent mild.

It looks like being a sparkling day on the ski area, though there may be a noticeable breeze higher up at times, especially this morning.

Another spell of snow is expected to arrive tomorrow afternoon, with another one hot on its heels on Friday night, lasting into Saturday. After a brief-ish drier spell later on Saturday and into Saturday evening, another batch of snow looks like arriving overnight into Sunday. The Arpege model suggests we could have a total of 30cm to 40cm of snowfall by Monday in the lower half of the ski area. The GFS model suggests similar amounts, so there is a reasonable chance of some very useful accumulations, with a chance that these may become significant. We will get a better idea of accumulations as these snow events come into the range of the highest resolution models.

WxCharts:

Yesterday we were given permission to display charts from www.wxcharts.com. Many thanks to them and so you may see these popping up from time to time on this page.

Injury:

As those on our WhatsApp group are aware, I've been injured for some weeks now, which I picked up from getting a bit too carried away in the powder earlier in December. This (and an unwelcome non covid infection) has meant that I have been unable to head up into the ski area, or run on my usual winter routes up to Mouet. Hopefully this will change this weekend.

Day 28 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... UK To FR Travel Restrictions To Be Eased Soon...

Weather & Snow Report:

The flurries produced only a dusting since the last update, however, much colder air has now arrived and it is currently -2c at 1000m, -9c at 1800m and -13c at 2200m.

Travel Restrictions News:

French Gov spokesman Gabriel Attal said this afternoon that the list of compelling reasons for travel to France from the UK will be expanded in the very near future. He mentioned professional reasons in particular, but also said that other restrictions may be eased next week. There were no details given on dates etc. This looks much more promising for those who hope to travel to France from the UK in the near future.

Chatel Snow Report: 05/01/2022: 10.05am

Day 28 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

There have been snow showers / flurries since the early update, however, these have only added a dusting to the overnight total and it looks as though we may not see very much more during the day down here in the village.

The next snowfall looks like arriving on Friday morning, followed by one on Friday night into early Saturday, followed in turn by one from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon. These should continue the improvement to conditions on the ski area, which has taken a battering recently, with the cloudy and mild weather. Hopefully, there will also be periods over the coming days when snow making can recommence, starting from this evening.

In the village, we are now on over 2m of snowfall since the end of November, which is more than the total for the whole season at 1200m for the 2019/20 season, which saw only 1m at 1000m. However, as the snow pack has thawed incredibly quickly here at village elevation this season, we are almost starting from scratch on the lowest areas which rely on natural snow cover. So, the snowfalls at the end of the week and at the weekend, combined with this recent one, should go some way to restoring some sort of normality. The vast majority of the pistes in the Chatel area have ample or good coverage, with a mix of man made and natural snow providing a resilient base - so there are no issues there, with the main problems being on slopes such as those on Barbossine and heading into Torgon, La Chapelle, where cover is generally thinner.

There is a noticeable wind from the north or northwest higher up today, bring a significant wind chill. Currentt temperatures are close to 0c at 1100m, -5c at 1800m and -8c at 2200m.

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel where it has been snowing again! There is an uneven cover of fresh snow in the village, as some surfaces have retained the warmth of the last few days, however there is a touch over 10cm on vehicle rooves this morning. The snow on other surfaces is quite wet as the 0c isotherm is only just nudging down to village elevation. It is currently snowing lightly, however, the precipitation radar suggests we may see a spell of more useful snowfall during the morning. Updates to follow.

Day 27 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Snow Still Expected..

Weather & Snow Report:

The latest model runs are now coming out and the rain to snow event is still expected overnight. The latest hi-res Arome suggests the snoiw/rain boundary might take an hour or two longer to come down to the village in the early hours of tomorrow, with the 0c isotherm at village level by breakfast time. As for quantities of snow, below are 3 graphics, 2 from Arome and one from Arpege. Hopefully the Arome snow and graupel accumulation chart will be close to what we end up with, but there is definitely a chance that the lower accumulations of the second graphic could be the result. We shall see... but it should be snowing when we wake up in the morning, which will be a welcome change from the recent mild dirge!!!

Chatel Snow Report: 04/01/2022: 7.55am

Day 27 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Mild Continues Today But Snow Overnight...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel where it is a mild and damp start to the day. Today is looking like being a windy day higher up on the ski area and the morning dampness should be replaced by something brighter this afternoon. The 0c isotherm is currently up between 2500m and 2700m, so any precipitation is falling as rain at all elevations of Chatel's ski area and the mild conditions mean that we have snow eating conditions this morning, especially in the lower elevations, continuing the substantial thaw. The Arome wind gust forecast for 1pm today is shown below.

Rain and snow arrives tonight, potentially during the second half of the evening. Up to midnight, the snow/rain boundary looks like being towards 1700m/1800m, but this should come down to the village sometime between 1am and 2am (approximately).

Snow should fall at all elevations of the ski area tomorrow morning, before petering out during the second half of the morning, with a drier and perhaps brighter afternoon. Timing of the cessation of the precipitation is uncertain.

Below is the 0c isotherm forecast.

Today   Wednesday

10am: 2570m

Midday: 2491m

4pm: 2616m

10pm: 2160m

Midnight: 2040m

2am: 1366m

4am: 1353m

6am: 1246m

10am: 898m
Midday: 815m

As for amounts of snowfall, as this is a rain to snow event for the village, it does bring some added complications, however the range looks at this stage to be between 5cm and 15cm at 1200m. Higher up, there should be a fair bit more, perhaps 20cm to 25cm, though there are some mixed messages from the models. The Arome snow + graupel forecast chart below is potentially at the highest end of expectations for this snowfall and is noticeably different to the second graphic, the snow only accumulation forecast, so perhaps the totals will end up somewhere between these 2 charts. I'm keeping a bit of an open mind on this one, but will take a look at the model updates later in the day and will update appropriately.

Whatever happens in terms of cm's, conditions on the ski area should improve over the coming days, with colder air in place for the rest of the week, allowing some snow making to commence too. Another snowfall is expected on Friday, perhaps arriving in the afternoon, followed by another one on Saturday night / Sunday.

Day 26 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

There is more in the way of cloud in the area today and we have a bit more of a normal spread of temperatures across the ski area, with a mild 6.5c at 1000m, falling to -1c at 2200m. The slopes are reported to be fairly busy at PLJ, though not on the same level of last week. and, as is often the case, it is quieter than over in Avoriaz.

The patchy cloud cover is accelerating the thaw at lower elevations and the natural snow covered, L'Epervier piste is now looking in a sorry state (see photo below). As mentioned earlier, the thaw will accelerate for a time tomorrow, with some morning rain for all elevations of the ski area, before that rain to snow event arrives on Tuesday night. Pistes which rely on natural snow cover and are on sunny aspect slopes, will come under further pressure, however, much of the ski area still has good cover. Hopefully, we will be looking at a much improved situation by Wednesday evening.

Chatel Snow Report: 03/01/2022: 8.15am

Day 26 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Mild Until Tuesday Night...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel where air temperatures are above 0c in the village this morning, with the freezing level somewhere close to 2000m at the moment. The snow pack should have seen a re-freeze overnight. A dry day is expected today, though there may be a noticeable wind oicking up higher up (see graphic below). Showers are possible overnight and into tomorrow and these are likely to fall as rain at all elevations of the ski area. Winds will increase tomorrow and gales are possible higher up during the afternoon, especially late in the day. A cold front is expected to bring a spell of rain and snow on Tuesday night into Wednesday, with snow expected to be falling in the village by the early hours of Wednesday. This should (hopefully) bring a useful snowfall to the ski area. There'll be a look at the 0c isotherm levels and potential quantities on tomorrow morning's update. The snow may have cleared through by Wednesday lunchtime, introducing even colder air for a time and the chance of further snow flurries. After a dry 48 hours, there is the chance of another spell of snow on Friday afternoon (timing and duration to be confirmed), with another snowfall possible for the weekend, perhaps on Sunday (though some charts suggest Saturday too).

Before these snowfalls, and the return to winter conditions, there will be further thawing of the snowpack during today and more especially tomorrow, which may see a snow eating combination of cloud, mild winds and the chance of showers. So, conditions are expected to deteriorate further before the next snowfall. However, the snow coverage on most pistes remains good, especially those which have a base with a mix of natural and artificial snow.

Day 25 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Mild Higher Up Again...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel where it is a familiar story this morning with a temperature inversion bringing daft temperatures to 1800m (eg it was 11c at Avoriaz at 6am) and a touch of frost to the village and valley.

Today looks like being a dry and bright day, though there may be a bit more in the way of cloud in comparison to yesterday. There is also likely to be more in the way of wind for those higher lifts and cols (see graphic below).

The mild weather is set to continue for a bit longer and Tuesday may see some very mild weather and perhaps some foehn but then there is some good news, as colder and potentially snowier weather is expected this week. Rain and snow looks like arriving later in the day on Tuesday and the snow/rain boundary may come down to the village quite quickly during the evening, bringing an overnight spell of snow for all elevations of the Chatel ski area. Snow may fall to elevations right down the valley early on Wednesday with some charts suggesting a 0c isotherm of only 600m by then. Quantities of snow look useful rather than significant, but it should start a bit of a reboot of the ski area, which has seen a mild onslaught over the last week or so. There then looks like being a drier couple of days, with temperatures we would expect at this time of year, so some snowmaking might be possible. The end of the week and next weekend could see further snowfall, as indicated by this morning's ECMWF charts and a significant snowfall is a possibility. This is something I'll be keeping a close eye on.

So, in summary, the mild air appears to be heading out - though it will do further damage to the snowpack, especially on Tuesday, before that change to something more normal from Tuesday night.

Day 24 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

It feels warm this afternoon, in fact a tee shirt could be comfortably worn in the sunshine in the village. Temperatures have been up above 13c at 1800m, so it is more like April at the monent, rather than the start of the year.

With injury still hindering mountain activities, I did wander up to the half way of Barbossine today and it looks as though the 100% natural snow, sunny aspect, L'Epervier piste is managing to retain some snow cover, which is testament to the volume of snow which fell in the first half of December.

Dry weather continues until Tuesday night, with mild weather tomorrow, slightly cooler (but still mild) weather on Monday and then very mild and perhaps very windy weather for Tuesday. Rain and snow is expected on Tuesday night and into Monday and as indicated earlier, it now looks as though we might get away with a brief damp spell in the village, before the snow/rain boundary comes down by Wednesday morning. Hopefully there will be some useful accumulations. I'll take another look at this on tomorrow morning's update.

Day 24 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Happy New Year...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel and Happy New Year / Bonne Annee / Blwyddyn Newydd Dda... there is another large temperature inversion across the area this morning, with temperatures close to 0c in the valley and a really, really mild 10c at 1800m! The clear skies should have meant that the pistes will have seen a re-freeze overnight from radiative cooling. Winds look like staying light today, but will be stronger tomorrow.

The main news this morning is that the models have toned down the precipitation event for Tuesday / Wednesday, with less rain now expected and the precipitation may not arrive until later in the day on Tuesday. The washout Tuesday scenario now appears off the agenda, with some sort of rain to snow event still expected, but snowfall is now much more likely from Tuesday night and into Wednesday down here in the village, which is very good news, though amounts are obviously uncertain at this stage. Temperatures should also be more sensible from Wednesday too, potentially allowing some snow making at times.

There'll be another look at this during the day.

Day 23 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

The skies were clearer from the word go this morning and it is a lovely day here in Chatel, though unusually mild, in fact it feels really warm in the sunshine. The pistes were reported to be concrete-esque in some areas this morning, though these should soften on the sunnier aspect slopes today, with a hint of spring in the air (which is something we shouldn't be saying on the 31st December!) - so some areas are likely to become slushy. It is also pretty busy out there, as you would expect on New Year's Eve.

This very mild and fine weather is expected to last until Monday. During Monday, cloud and wind is set to increase and rain is likely to arrive overnight into Tuesday. Tuesday morning is potentially looking wet, but the snow/rain limit should come down from the top of the ski area down to the village by the end of the afternoon. It does look as though most of the precipitation will fall as rain on the lower half of the ski area, with the snowier period perhaps less significant than the rainier period. The models are hinting at it being quite a major precipitation event, so it would be a shame to see most of it fall as rain in the village - however, that looks a possibility. Areas above mid-station should see a significant snowfall. Snow/rain boundaries to be confirmed as we get closer to the event. Before then.... enjoy a taste of spring time!

Chatel Snow Report: 31/12/2021: 7.50am

Day 23 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... where there is a huge temperature inversion in place early this morning with the immediate valley area seeing air temperatures close to 0c, whereas up at 1800m, it is more like 11c !!! As the skies are clear, the pistes should have seen an overnight re-freeze at most elevations due to radiative cooling of the snow surface. There is some wind higher up today, which may be noticeable on those higher lifts and cols. Sunny aspect slopes and the village should become toasty for a time this afternoon.

The models are still suggesting a significant rain to snow event arriving on Monday night and lasting through into early Wednesday. At the moment, unfortunately, it looks as though there could be another prolonged spell of rain, before the snow/rain limit comes down to more useful elevations. More on this later.

Day 22 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

We have sunshine!!!! After what seems like an eternity, the blue skies are back today. However, is very mild though and some pistes are reported to be very slushy, whilst others have held up well after the mild onslaught and rain of the last few days. Hopefully there will be a piste refreeze overnight.

Photos below were from Mme Snow Report's venture into the ski area this morning.

The other 2 photos were of the major incident in the village this morning, which took place up at Petit Chatel, where some sort of landslide occured just in front of a large apartment block. An evacuation was carried out and there was a huge response from the emergency services, with specialist pompiers units on scene too. No injuries were reported, but there has been a waterfall of mud pouring onto the Route de Petit Chatel.

Chatel Snow Report: 30/12/2021: 9.45am

Day 22 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... After The Rain...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... the rain has finally ended though there appears to be one or two showers in the area, however, today is going to be much improved in comparison to the last couple of days and wind is not expected to be an issue.

In excess of 45mm of rain fell at 1000m in the area yesterday, so higher areas will have seen a fair bit more than that - and it rained to elevations well above the top of the PDS ski area. There has been a significant thaw this week on the ski area, especially at lower elevations, though the snow cover on many key pistes remains very good. The snow pack in the village has been decimated in comparison to the situation a couple of weeks ago.

A settled spell is now expected for the next few days, with high pressure becoming dominant for a time. The air aloft will be very mild, with the 0c isotherm likely to rise to very high elevations, however, the clearer skies should bring overnight piste re-freezes and local temperature inversions. Sunny aspect slopes and the village will become very mild indeed during the afternoon tomorrow and over the weekend, in contrast to shaded aspect slopes and valley areas.

This morning, I was hoping to bring news of a guaranteed snowfall arriving next week, however, things remains very much in the balance, with some sort of rain to snow event now looking like being on the cards during the period from Monday to Wednesday. It is far too early to know the duration of the spell of precipitation which is likely to be of rain and how much snow will fall thereafter, however, this morning's ECMWF has next Tuesday as being a very wet day, with snow confined to higher areas, before the snow/rain boundary comes down on Tuesday night. That scenario is only a possibility at this stage, and changes should be expected, so treat any of those automated forecasts, which show next week, with some scepticism, as they are likely to chop and change.

Next Update:
During the day - hopefully with some photos!

Chatel Snow Report: 29/12/2021: 11.00am

Day 21 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Rain Today...

Weather & Snow Report:

It is raining heavily in Chatel as this update is being typed and that rain now extends up to the top of the ski area. Alot of rain is expected to fall - see graphic below. There is Meteo France orange weather warning in place for the area.

Drier weather is set to arrive tomorrow along with some brighter conditions and there should be plenty of sunshine on Friday and Saturday and possibly Sunday too, though there is a high level of uncertainty by then. The better weather will also see some very mild air arrive, with the 0c isotherm perhaps reaching 3800m during this period! However, the clearer skies should mean the pistes re-freeze overnight under clear skies and there will be a return of temperature inversion conditions across the area. Sunnier aspect slopes and the village are expected to feel warm in the afternoon sunshine.

So, the ski area will continue to take a bit of a battering through the next 18 hours or so and sunny aspect slopes will see further thawing in the mild sunshine later in the week. Fortunately, there is a good base in place on most pistes, though the pistes which do not have snow cannon coverage will obviously come under pressure from this mild onslaught, especially at lower elevations.

Yesterday, most charts agreed on colder air arriving early next week, with some snowfall too. This morning, that has been dialled back, with a shorter cold snap and less in the way of useful snowfall. The situation looks finely poised and small adjustments could bring a return of the snowier outlook, so lets see what tomorrow morning's update brings. Note that at the time of this update, sites such as yr.no are still showing yesterday evening's ECMWF snowier run, rather than this morning's drier and less cold update.

Chatel Snow Report: 29/12/2021: 8.00am

Day 21 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... where it is raining this morning and the snow/rain boundary is currently heading upwards to the top of the ski area and may get as high as 2800m by this evening! The rain will be persistent and there will be heavier bursts with the Arome model suggesting 80mm of rain by 7am tomorrow morning. Drier, brighter but very mild air is expected to arrive tomorrow and last through into the weekend. This morning's models have generally downgraded the potential for snow during the first half of next week, but I'll take a more detailed look at the forecast on the next update, which should be online later this morning.

Edit 8.05am: there has been a bit of snow falling as low as the village ealier this morning, with a wet dusting on some surfaces. A bit of fresh snow is visible on the trees above 1400m.

Day 20 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Photos...

Weather & Snow Report:

It is a soggy day here in Chatel, with snow confined to the highest elevations and there are some strong gusts of wind higher up too. The weather looks worse tomorrow - in terms of amounts of rain.

The latest model runs continue the theme of a potential snowfall arriving next Monday, along with a colder snap. More on this on the next update.

Chatel Snow Report: 28/12/2021: 8.30am

Day 20 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Mild & Wet... Snow Next Week???

Weather & Snow Report:

Avalanche blasting is booming out across the village this morning, an indication of the fresh snow higher up and also the strength of the winds since yesterday. Those winds could be an issue on the ski area today in terms of lift disruption and the forecast graphic for 3pm is below and shows the potential strength of the gusts.

The reason for the wind, rain and snow is that low pressure is dominating our weather, however, we are on the mild side of the air masses, meaning that the snow/rain boundary is elevated today and will go up to incredibly high elevations tomorrow - perhaps as high as 2700m tomorrow evening!!! Unfortunately, the very mild air tomorrow may combine with some intense periods of precipitation, resulting in alot of rain falling at all elevations of the ski area. Arome suggests as much as 60mm of rain falling between 6am tomorrow and 1am Thursday!

Below are the forecast 0c isotherm levels, with an approximate snow/ rain boundary 300m below these figures.

Today   Wednesday

10am: 2178m

Midday: 2179m

4pm: 2032m

10pm: 1778m

10am: 2316m

Midday: 2545m

4pm: 2808m

7pm: 3078m

The 0c isotherm is expected to be well above 3000m for Thursday and into the weekend, however, the weather will be improving again, with an overnight temperature inversion likely under clear skies and the pistes should see overnight re-freezes. It should also feel really quite warm in the daytime sunshine on these days. In terms of the ski area, there is likely to be a deterioraton in conditions for many elevations during the next 36 hours, with a noticeable thaw. The situation should stabilise under the clearer skies later in the week, though note that the very mild air will continue the thaw on sunny aspect slopes.

Looking ahead - and some charts this morning show some colder air returning from the northwest, bringing snowfall during the first half of next week. More on this on subsequent updates.

Day 20 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Illness Preventing Updates.

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... apologies for the lack of updates as I am currently ill (not covid related) however, there should be an update online this morning. It is currently unsettled with strong winds on the upper half of the ski area and rain and snow is falling, with the snow increasingly restricted to higher elevations.

Next Update:
Hopefully during the morning.

Chatel Snow Report: 26/12/2021: 6.50am

Day 18 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... thre were sone showers on Christmas Day, with the snow / rain boundary remaining high up on the ski area, however, the showers of today, should eventually fall as snow a bit lower down. Air temperatures are currently ranging from around 1c at 1100m to -2.5c at 2200m. The 0c isotherm forecast for today suggests the following values...

10am: 1700m

midday: 1888m

2pm: 1791m

4pm: 1725m

8pm: 1532m

As showery outbreaks are possible, then flakes could eventually come down close to the village for a time this evening.

Below is the Arome snow accumulation forecasrt chart up to 7am Monday from meteociel.fr

Further outbreaks of rain and snow are possible on Monday, with a snow/rain boundary potentially no lower than 1500m. Thereafter, further precipitation is possible on Tuesday and Wednesday, however, the snow/rain boundary will be trending higher and is expected to at elevations above the top of the ski area by Wednesday! This heralds are very, very mild end to the next week, though the weather should also become settled again.

In terms of significant snowfall for all elevations of the ski area, patience will be required as the charts suggest that may be some time off and is unlikely in the next 10 days.

There may be a noticeable wind higher up on the ski area today, however, tomorrow looks very windy, with gusts up to 70 kmh possible in some of the higher areas, which does bring the chance of some lift disruption. I'll post the wind forecast chart in the morning.

Next Update:
Probably later today - or early tomorrow.

Chatel Snow Report: 25/12/2021: 7.10am

Day 17 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... Joyeux Noël - Happy Christmas - Nadolig Llawen... after some early showers yesterday morning, the weather improved for a period, though the showery outbreaks of rain and snow returned later. The rain/snow boundary was quite high up on the ski area, with wet flakes reported at 1800m.

This morning the temperatures are close to 0c across the ski area and the pistes should have seen a re-freeze, so there may be some rather hard sections of pistes this morning. Although some models keep it mostly dry today, the hi-res Arome sugggests showers are possible, with the period of highest risk of rain and snow being this afternoon, with a rain/snow boundary around 1500m. There may be a noticeable breeze higher up on some parts of the ski area today. The showery scenario could be repeated tomorrow and further outbreaks of rain and snow are possible before midweek, before dry, sunny and very mild conditions arrive for the second half of the week. Timings for the periods of precipitation from Monday to Wednesday is very uncertain. Some charts suggest that there could be some exceptionally mild temperatures by the weekend, perhaps approaching record breaking levels for the end of December / start of January. More on this on subsequent updates.

As mentioned previously, injury is preventing trips up the mountain at the moment.

Next Update:
Perhaps one later or more likely to be early tomorrow.

Chatel Snow Report: 24/12/2021: 7.15am

Day 16 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Early Update...

Weather & Snow Report:

Bonjour from Chatel... the weather is changing with a generally more changeable and at times unsettled theme for the coming days. There is still a temperature inversion in the area this morning (-5c in the immediate valley and +1c at 1800m), however, the inversion will disappear from today, with more in the way of cloud expected. The increase in cloud during today may bring a few showers later, with a snow/rain boundary of around 1800m. More noticeable will be the wind today, with some strong gusts possible on some of the highest areas (see graphic below).

The cloudier theme is set to continue on Christmas Day, though there are mixed messages from the models regarding the chances of rain and snow. The high resolution Arome model suggests the chance of some showery outbreaks, with the snow/rain bounday expected to be somewhere between 1600m and 1800m. Further spells of precipitation are possible between Monday and Thursday. There remains a high level of uncertainty regarding the amounts of rain and snow and their timings. This morning's GFS model run tones down the potential for any significant amounts of snowfall, though it suggests that snow could come down to 1500m on Tuesday. Yesterday evening's ECMWF model run showed a period of heavier precipitation during Tuesday and Wednesday, though the snow/rain bounday might be quite high up the ski area. All models suggest a very mild spell arriving during the second half of next week and through next weekend, though it should be drier and sunnier by next weekend.

So, details of the timings of the potential precipitation events are still far from being resolved, with Tuesday / Wednesday perhaps seeing the heaviest of any rain and snow. The village elevation is expected to see a steady thaw of snow over the coming days, so it is good job that we have excellent snow cover at the moment.

Chatel Snow Report: 23/12/2021: 4.15pm

Day 15 Of The 2021/22 Chatel Season... Update 2...

Weather & Snow Report:

There's been a bit more cloud today, making the sunshine a bit hazier at times and also bringing a milder feel to the weather here in the village, late this afternoon. More cloud is expected tomorrow, however very little or no precipitation is expected, which is a good thing as the 0c isotherm is expected to be above 2000m. The cloud will bring a bit of a thaw to those areas which have been frozen solid in the last week. For example, the road along the Dranse river to the Intermarche has looked like Siberia all week, so this may see a change tomorrow. There also looks like being some wind higher up tomorrow too - see graphic below.

The cloudy and relatively mild theme is set to continue on Christmas Day, with perhaps a few flakes of snow above 1800m. There may be more in the way of precipitation overnight into Boxing Day, which looks as though this will only bring snow to the upper half of the ski area, with some rain lower down, but more on this on tomorrow's update as there remains plenty of disagreement amongst the various models. By upper half of the ski area, we generally mean snow which accumulates above about 1600m - so around the Plaine Dranse area at PLJ and close to the bottom of the L'Echo Alpin chairlift on Linga, and the top telecabine station at Super Chatel. There looks like being further spells of precipitation during the first half of next week, with the snow perhaps coming down to the village for a time, but, in general it looks a fairly mild pattern. The ECMWF model this morning showed some incredibly mild air affecting the area next Thursday - which will hopefully be watered down over the coming days!

Apologies for the lack of photos at the moment - injury is curtailing mountain activities.
