01/01/2020: Today's Updates... Day 21...
The clear blue skies today brought a real spring-like feel once again to the mountains, with the sunniest slopes seeing some softening of the early hard pack snow.
As this evening's models are currently coming out, it still looks as though there is the chance of a tiny bit of precipitation on Saturday, though the trend today appears to be one where it may stay almost completely dry, with GFS and Arpege both in the dry camp on their latest runs. The trend has also been to downgrade the potential for an influx of colder air, with the these 2 models showing mild conditions returning on Sunday and Monday. If that is the case, then it is a shame, as it looked as though there might be a decent period where snowmaking was possible, however, any such window may now be shortlived.
These changes do have some knock on effects for next week. During the day today, there were some charts which suggested a pattern change arriving by midweek next week, with the GFS 6z operational run responsible for some initial excitement, however, that return of winter scenario has disappeared on its 12z run!
All that can really be said this evening is that the first half of next week may continue the dry and mostly mild theme. There is the chance of a change from midweek onwards, however, this is 7 days away, so it is really difficult to have much confidence in the details when there are such huge variations in the model output. Also, any change may be a fairly mild one, ie with snow/rain limits being an issue, so apart from that one set of charts from the GFS 6z run today, there remains no real signs just yet of a return of winter.
