01/02/2021: Today's Updates...
The accumulating snow line remains above the village with a mix of rain, sleet and snow falling at the 1100m and 1200m elevations.
Bonjour from Chatel.
Rain and sleet has been falling in the village early this morning, with snow falling higher up. Further precipitation is expected through the day, though it looks as though it will be another marginal situation for the village in terms of accumulating snowfall. So, although we may see wet snow falling at times at 1200m, it may not amount to much, unless it comes down very heavily. Below are the hi-res forecast levels of the 0c isotherm or freezing level - which are once again a bit higher than those you will see on apps and websites powered by the GFS model.
Snow often falls at approximately 300m below this level, though it can come down much lower when the precipitation is heavy, however, with the freezing levels above the village, any accumulations at 1200m are going to be wet and potentially transient.
0c Isotherm Level Today
1576m at 10am
1563m at midday
1621m at 2pm
1705m at 5pm
1727m at midnight.
Here are the hi-res accumulation forecast charts from www.meteociel.fr
Note the marginal nature for the village - which means anything from 0cm to 10cm is possible - but very little is probably the most likely scenario.
Thereafter, it is expected to get much milder this week, starting from tomorrow with the freezing level rising above 2000m and this could rise closer to 3000m from Wednesday. Some charts suggest a really cold blast heading into the UK next weekend, which could result in some colder air filtering down to us early next week, but this is far from certain and the current pattern is not really what we want to see. This is perhaps a result of the SSW in January (Sudden Stratospheric Warming), which in our experience, does not necessarily result in positive outcomes for the NW French Alps... but could bring cold and snow to the UK!!!
Updates to follow if the snow comes down to the village elevation...
