01/03/2020: Today's Updates... Day 81...

5.50pm:

Looks windy early tomorrow, but less windy in the afternoon.

Below is the gust chart in km/h for 9am tomorrow from www.meteociel.fr

Next update - early tomorrow with an update on any overnight snowfall - expected 6.30am.

5.45pm:

Conditions were excellent this morning on the ski area with blue skies and fresh snowfall (15cm to 20cm reported at 1800m) and the wind didn't interfere too much with the lifts. There were also far fewer people in the area than expected. It did get quite mild during the day and then, later this afternoon, the cloud returned and there has been some rain and snow in the area, with some flakes falling to 1100m at Linga.

Tomorrow is looking unsettled with rain and snow arriving in the morning and again there are major differences between models such as the GFS and the hi-res Arome, regarding the snow/rain limits, with GFS showing snowfall for the village elevation throughout the day, however...

...the latest hi-res Arome prediction for snow/rain limits is as follows.

9am/10am: 1600m

10am/midday: 1600m - 1700m

midday/2pm: 1700m - 1600m

2pm/4pm: 1500m - 1350m

4pm/6pm: 1350m - 1200m

8pm: 1000m

10pm: 900m

Midnight: 800m

2am: 700m

These are higher during the daytime in comparison to the automated apps and websites powered by GFS are showing.

If the precipitation is heavy, then snow can fall to lower elevations than forecast. These snow/rain limits will be updated on the forecast page tomorrow morning.

Note: Most of the updates during the daytime in March will be posted on the WhatsApp, with an early morning and early evening update on these pages. The forecast page will continue as normal.

6.30am:

Bonjour from Chatel... Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus! Happy St. David's Day and it is also the first day of meteorological spring. The weather does not stick to neat 3 month seasons and there is some winter weather in the area at the moment, with wet snow falling in the village, bringing a slight, wet dusting to some surfaces. For the 1200m elevation, it looks as though the hi-res model, Arome, was (once again) far more accurate than the models such as GFS which power many of the the popular automated websites and apps - however - we are expecting more snow to have fallen at 1800m than was suggested in yesterday's forecast...

This morning's forecast is expected to be online at 7.15am... http://www.chatelweb.com/chatel_snow_forecast.php - and updates on this page will follow during the day.
