02/03/2020: Today's Updates... Day 82...

6.30pm: Today saw an eventful day of weather, with an evaporative cooling snowfall event arriving this afternoon. This results in snow falling to much lower elevations than would normally be expected, despite the 0C isotherm (freezing level), remaining quite high. For this to happen the precipitation needs to be heavy and the wind needs to fall fairly light. This afternoon, these factors helped bring snow down to 700m for a time and bring accumulating snow to Chatel village, before the intensity of the precipitation eased and the snow became wetter and sleetier lower down, with the ground becoming very slushy. During the event, the flakes of snow were huge! Higher up, the heavy period of snowfall put down 10cm+ of fresh snow in a very short period of time. In the last hour, the snowfall has pepped up again in the village and, with the 0C isotherm now falling, snow is starting to accumulate again.

Tomorrow morning should be interesting, as snow is expected to continue to fall well into the night...

Text update to follow before 7pm regarding today's snow event... photo from a few mins ago...

Heavy snow falling in the village and at 1110m at Linga - heavier precipitation has brought some evaporative cooling

effect, which drags down those snow/rain limits to lower levels. This is excellent news! Flakes are huge!
