03/02/2020: Today's Updates... Day 54...
Snow is still incoming for tomorrow, according to the latest model runs, though we probably won't wake up to very much, however, the latest hi-res Arome model suggests some useful totals by 7am Wednesday - see the first map below.
Unfortunately it does look as though wind may well be an issue again, with the second forecast map below showing gusts in kmh at 1pm - which look easily high enough to cause lift disruption.
Charts from www.meteociel.fr
The wind has been causing havoc with the lift system today, though a few more lifts have opened this afternoon, after an almost total closure of the upper ski area this morning, which included the whole of Super Chatel for a time. The snow on some of the open pistes was reported to be in reasonable condition.
However, a visit to the Barbossine sector this afternoon, which of course is on the sunny side of the ski area and does have the benefit of snow cannon, found a spectacular thaw had taken place. Areas which had excellent cover at the end of last week, had been stripped. The photos below show the situation at about 1450m, with the first photo showing the precariously thin cover of the access piste to the halfway station. The second photo is of the track / snow show trail and the final photo is of the fields just below the halfway station.
Some of this damage will be repaired by tomorrow's snowfall and areas such as PLJ and Linga should be in very good condition again by Wednesday / Thursday.
There will be more on the latest accumulation forecast on an update this evening.
The effects of the overnight rain are clear to see as it gets light here in Chatel this morning. Big slides in the Linga area and one onto the piste too.
Wet snow conditions area expected on the ski today and there could be further issues with wind - as discussed on this morning's forecast page at www.chatelweb.com/chatel_snow_forecast.php
Bonjour from Chatel... The weather is still very mild here in Chatel early this morning, however, the rain has turned more showery and there is some snow on the way...
