05/02/2020: Today's Updates... Day 56...
Updated: Feb 6
The blue skies returned today - hooray - after a fairly dismal spell for the ski area and there was fresh snow to enjoy. There was still a noticeable and cold wind blowing higher up, which was blowing the snow up the piste at the top of the Linga red - exposing the icy base, however, the wind wasn't too bad in other areas.
The snowfall of yesterday and last night did bring some lovely, light powder, though apart from some drifted pockets, it was generally not deep enough to satisfy those who enjoy the bottomless type of conditions, as a hard base was lurking not too far below the surface. The strength of the wind yesterday did mean there were wide variations in cover, but generally it looks as though less than 25cm of snow fell at 1800m, with 20cm perhaps being not far off the mark.
On the pistes this afternoon, the conditions could be described as being normal for the time of year, with soft chopped up stuff and icy patches in between. Conditions should be excellent tomorrow morning after tonight's grooming.
As we left Linga late this afternoon, the snow cannon were firing up, which will help to consolidate the base in the lower areas, which took such a hammering from the recent rain and mild temperatures.
The next snowfall looks like coming in during the first half of next week, but more on that on tomorrow's updates and it looks as though we have a few days of sunny weather to enjoy.
Photos from mid-afternoon at PLJ...
Snowy scenes this morning - though we don't have the classic snow laden trees, due to the amounts of wind yesterday... but it is good to see the village white again...
Bonjour from Chatel... there was some further snowfall overnight, bringing the total recorded at our location just below 1200m to 16cm since yesterday morning. The fresh snow cover on the ground is mostly a bit less than this, depending on surface type etc. The snow is powdery with a current air temperature of -1.5C. Snowing very lightly.
This morning's forecast is expected to be online today at approx 6.30am at: http://www.chatelweb.com/chatel_snow_forecast.php - and updates on this page will follow during the day.
