06/03/2020: Today's Updates... Day 86...
Most updates during the daytime periods in March will now by solely on the WhatsApp group...
The overnight snowfall brought winter snow conditions to many elevations of the ski area today with only the lowest pistes seeing a light covering of wet snow. Above about 1500m / 1600m, the snow was plentiful with various reports today suggesting 30cm+ had fallen higher up, perhaps as much as 50cm in places, though the snow had been re-distributed by the wind, so getting an actual figure was always going to be a challenge. Whatever the actual amount, there was plenty for people to enjoy once again, after the really abysmal weather of yesterday.
The area remains busy-ish towards PLJ and Avoriaz, however, once again, the Linga car park was far from full this afternoon. Whether this is just an unusually quiet French holiday week, or whether we are seeing something related to the viral outbreak, remains to be seen.
A power cut knocked out the lifts on Linga for an hour or so this afternoon, resulting in the back up generator being used to inch those stuck on the telecabine into the stations. Fortunately the power came back on, however, this is the second major power cut in the ski area in a few days.
A bit more snow is expected overnight - which we'll report on early tomorrow.
Considering this winter has been an incredibly mild one in Europe or, to rephrase... a mind bogglingly mild one, the Chatel ski area has not done too badly at all! Yes there have been issues, especially on the very lowest pistes and the off piste, powder opportunities were scarce for some weeks, and snow making opportunities have been few and far between - however, much of the piste skiing at PLJ has been what you would expect to see in a normal winter.
A lucky escape? Or testament to the snow-sured-ness of the PLJ area? Probably a bit of both.
Late afternoon views...
Bonjour from Chatel... after a damp day yesterday, the snow/rain boundary did come down to the village overnight, with 4.5cm on some surfaces early this morning in the village, with less on others. The current air temperature in the village is close to 0C, with a few flakes falling and a noticeable early breeze.
This morning's forecast is expected to be online at 7.25am... http://www.chatelweb.com/chatel_snow_forecast.php
