15/01/2020: Today's Updates... Day 35...

A tour around the PLJ and Linga areas this afternoon found plenty of good skiing and boarding again. Snow conditions continue to defy expectations, due to the overnight piste maintenance and the clear skies, which have been a feature of this month. Steeper slopes do have plenty of scraped and icier areas, however, there is plenty of grippy snow to be found and the depth of cover remains solid. When one looks back to the concrete conditions of Christmas Day, there is currently no comparison, which is remarkable as it has hardly snowed since! There was some wind again at the top of the Chatel area today, but not enough to spoil things.

The snowless period is set to come to an end on Friday. Quantities still look useful rather than significant, so perhaps around 20cm of snow at mid-station, with a chance that this could go up or down. Once the snow event comes into the range of the highest resolution models during tomorrow, we should then have a slightly better idea of where this one is heading. Snow/rain limits look like being favourable, with snow expected for the village elevation on Friday evening, with the snow falling to areas lower than 1000m overnight. More on all of this in the morning on the forecast update, with a very important update expected later in the day, when this event come into range of the Arome model, which is often the best guide to precipitation amounts in this area.

Not the best quality photos - but a couple from PLJ this afternoon.

Update expected before 7pm...

The weather remains beautiful here in Chatel today and it is feeling spring-like in the sunshine in the village. The models have been encouraging today for a useful snowfall tomorrow night. The Arpege model is now also trending in the right direction, with its latest offering suggesting this... nothing spectacular, but this was suggesting much less yesterday. Note that this model gives a broad brush approach, so don't take it too seriously regarding the local detail.
