15/12/2018: Today's Updates... 9.15pm...

9.15pm:

There's an interesting scenario coming up tonight with milder air pushing in over some cold air that has been in situ over the area for several days. Despite the 0C isotherm shooting up to above 2000m later in the night and during the early morning period tomorrow, this does not necessarily mean that the snow/rain limit will shoot up too - but it might do!

So, we may see snow to low elevations for a time tonight or perhaps freezing rain. Whatever happens tonight and early tomorrow, the Arome hi-res model brings a chance of snow tomorrow evening and again on Monday morning.

Will update very early tomorrow morning...

5.50pm:

Day 1 of the 2018/9 Chatel ski season is over and it has been a day which saw blue skies, cold temperatures, mostly excellent snow cover and hard pistes.

The snow cover is generally really good on the open pistes, with a nice hard base in place in many of the key areas. The hardness of the pistes was perhaps the most noticeable feature of the day, but that was hardly surprising considering the cold temperatures this week and amounts of man made snow that have been added to the pistes. This did mean that pistes such as Combes from the top of Linga, dropping into the PLJ side had some quite icy areas this afternoon in the areas where any softer snow had been scraped off and the same can be said of the steep red back down on the Linga side, but it is difficult to complain when a just over a week ago there was hardly any snow at all on these pistes.

Best things about today - the amazing views and the fact that the area is open - well done to the resort piste teams.

Most disappointing thing - the new 6 man chair at PLJ is not ready to open yet!

Most bizarre thing about today - watching an Arctic hair overtaking skiers down the top of the Linga red and then flying uphill to the summit of Linga - incredible speed!

Saddest thing - seeing the pisteurs stretcher in action within the 2 hours of the area being open.

Next update - we may squeeze one in this evening once the models have all updated, otherwise it will all start again at the crack of dawn tomorrow...

12.40pm:

A selection of photos from this morning...

Report this eve...

10.45am:

Excellent snow cover on the pistes that are open. Pistes are well groomed and grippy but generally hard. New Pierre Longue 6 man chair is not open yet! Cold temperatures and snow cannon still pumping out in some areas. Photos to follow a bit later...

9.15am:

Heading up... in Linga telecabine...

It is the first day of a new season - updates will appear here... the snow forecast page should be updated around 7.45am...
