17/12/2018: Today's Updates... 5.55pm...

Day 3 Of The 2018/19 Chatel Ski Season:

5.55pm:

It has been an excellent afternoon here in Chatel. The morning snow petered out at lunchtime, but clouds have continued to come and go in the area, with some low cloud hanging around the valley. A trip to the ski area found some much better visibility than expected, with even a bit of sunshine from time to time and some superb snow conditions. The pistes and lifts were mostly very quiet and the snow quality was excellent above 1650m/1700m, but got increasing stickier on the lowest areas. There was some very nice powder to be found higher up!

In terms of how much snow has fallen, the measured total was 13cm in the village since late yesterday evening - though the snow pack was contracting later this morning as the temperatures remained above freezing. Higher up, it looks like there was 20cm to 25cm of snow between yesterday evening and early this afternoon, so there has been a very useful addition to the snow cover on the ski area.

Looking ahead, and after some milder air arriving during tomorrow, further snowfall is set to arrive on Wednesday / Thursday before some really rather mild weather arrives for the weekend. Most models are suggesting a mild weekend with some quite high snow/rain limits with a question mark thereafter - for the Christmas period. More on this tomorrow morning...

Heading up...

11.40am:

Another 2cm has been added since the last update. Still snowing lightly. Total of this snowfall is 13cm at 1200m, however the actual fresh snow cover is less than this as the snow is wet and temperatures are above 0c.

Heading to the ski area this afternoon...

9.25am:

A further 3cm of snow has fallen since 7am this morning, bringing the total to our location since yesterday evening to 11cm.

8.25am:

Snow is falling again now here in Chatel and further updates will be posted during the morning. We have had some internet issues this morning, hopefully resolved now but this did mean there was much less time that normal to produce the forecast...

7.10am:

Another snowfall arrived last night and brought 8cm of snow to our location just below 1200m.... further details to follow, with a bit more snow expected too - though note we have internet connection issues this morning so our forecast is running late...
