17/12/2019: Today's Updates... Day 6 Of The 2019/20 Season...
Despite the lack of foehn, temperatures have still reached 11c in the village today!
Illness has prevented a trip to the ski area again today - but we have been receiving messages from people who are out there and found some firm conditions higher up but very wet and soft snow towards the bottom of PLJ. Best place to be sounds like the top of Avoriaz, where reports suggest some excellent snow.
Temperatures have been edging up in the village this morning towards a very mild 9c, with chillier temperatures again on the valley bottom, however, foehn affected Chamonix was over 14c for a time this morning.
The models still suggest some precipitation arriving at the end of the week, however, there are some substantial differences between them regarding the detail. This morning's ECMWF suggests alot of rain and snow between Friday and Monday, with snow for most of the ski area, whereas the GFS has a drier day for Saturday and a generally slightly higher snow/rain limit by the looks of it, with the UK Met Office charts showing similarities to the ECMWF model. At the moment, it does look like some snow will arrive later on Friday, however how much and at what elevation is far from being resolved, so whether the lowest slopes benefit is a question which we won't know the answer of for another day or two.
Bonjour from Chatel, where the luck is with us this morning! It has been a mild night but we have been less affected by foehn as far as can be ascertained. It has been a mild night with temperatures around 6c in the village and between 3 and 4 in the valley, so the thaw has continued, however Morzine has been more affected with recent temps up to 10c and Chamonix has been up to 13c overnight!
So - the hairdryer has been avoided... so far!
