18/12/2019: Today's Updates... Day 7 Of the 2019/20 Season...

A trip to the ski area this afternoon found conditions to be generally pretty good, with an almost spring like feel to the pistes, with soft and grippy snow in the sunshine and much harder, frozen areas in the shade. The clearer skies have brought that real contrast back again between the sunnier slopes and those north facing ones, so the run from the top of Linga back down the telecabine was solid - not ice, but very firm indeed. In comparison, runs like Les Combes had that softer spring-like feel in the sunshine.

So, after a very mild start to the day, tonight should be noticeably colder and the ski area should get a good re-freeze, which will help it withstand the daytime mildness which is expected tomorrow and Friday. Rain and snow is still expected to arrive on Friday and the days thereafter, apart from a drier spell on Saturday, all have a really rather unsettled look about them, but more on that on tomorrow morning's forecast update.

The runs to the bottom of Linga remain shut, so all eyes will be this weekend to see if it can deliver...

The weather is much brighter here in Chatel after a rather damp and overcast start. There should be an update from the ski area this afternoon, after a couple of days absence.

Also, the latest model runs continue to suggest that there could be alot of precipitation between Friday and Christmas Eve, though the main uncertainty remains the snow/rain limits, which the medium range models are not very good at determining. The message at the moment, based on this morning's models, is that there is some promising output from the models in terms of potential quantities, but it could be very marginal at times in the village and on for the lowest slopes of the Chatel ski area.

Next update after a visit to the ski area...

Bonjour from Chatel, where there are some light showers affecting the area at the moment and it remains very mild, with a temperature of close to 7c in the village, with slightly colder temperatures over the snowfields in the valley bottom. The cloud and mild overnight temperatures have continued the steady thaw.

Is a change on the way? This morning, some charts continue to suggest the chance of abundant snowfalls between Friday and Monday, followed perhaps by another mild spell by midweek next week...
