19/01/2019: Today's Updates... 7.05pm...

It has been a lovely day here in Chatel, with plenty of good snow knocking about the area, especially on piste. Blue skies, sunshine and excellent January conditions in general.

As mentioned this afternoon, the models have been having a moment today, really backing away from some of the very cold scenarios that have been portrayed in recent days for the second half of next week - so no further comment on them until the overnight runs have been viewed tomorrow morning...

Blue skies today above Chatel with plenty of dry, grippy snow to be found on the pistes.

One thing that has been happening today is that the models have been downgrading the chances of useful snowfall on Tues/Wed of next week. It’s a bit too soon to write it off as a non event, as the models today do appear to be in a general state of chaos regarding the outlook, so we should have more of an idea tomorrow - but those GFS automated accumulation forecasts have dropped from in excess of 50cm to just 6cm in the spate of a few hours... ouch!

Cold and clear start here in Chatel...

A look at this morning's model runs from Meteociel.fr does throw up some noticeable differences next week, in the period beyond any potential mid-week snowfall, which was mentioned over on the forecast page.

The difference between the GFS and ECMWF charts at 192hrs is huge with GFS showing easterlies and a Scandinavian high and ECMWF showing low pressure over Scandinavia and the chance of southwesterlies arriving to this area. The more mobile developing scenario shown by ECMWF may end up being better for snowfall for this area, however, we have no way of knowing at this stage where all this is heading and the chance of deep cold air arriving as hinted on the UK Met Office charts since yesterday evening, is still a possibility.

Our preference is always for the mobile charts to verify as this brings the chance of snowfall to this part of the world, so a really, really cold, easterly and mostly dry scenario, although good for snow cover preservation, is not necessarily a particularly good thing - as in some ways, mild and sunny weather would be far more pleasant.

Bonjour - the temperatures are cold to start the day in the village area, not too far from -10c, with mostly clear skies above.

There will be further updates today, starting first on the forecast page, which will be updated between 7.30am and 7.45am...
