19/11/2020: A Bit Of Snow Tonight. Outlook Very Uncertain!
The weather here in Chatel early this morning is cloudy and fairly mild (6c) and there is some rain in the area, however, a little bit of snow is forecast overnight, as some colder air returns following the very mild temperatures of yesterday.
Below is the Arome hi-res model chart for tonight's snowfall from www.meteociel.fr ...with the numbers relating to fresh snowfall in cm.
There's a high level of uncertainty regarding the further outlook, though conditions will be dry and sunny this weekend, with milder daytime temperatures returning. The latest models for next week are providing mixed messages, for example, these two operational model charts from the GFS and ECMWF for the 192hr timeframe really couldn't be more different!!! The images are a bit blurry, but highlight the uncertainty.
In summary, the message this morning, regarding the prospects for significant snowfall is that it is unlikely in the next 5 days, but we'll be keeping a close eye on the period towards the end of next week.
There is no further news regarding the prospects for resort opening in terms of the Covid crisis, but various UK chalet companies have pulled their operations in France for this season in the last 24 hours, and one company with chalets in the PDS area, VIP, have gone into administration. It is hoped that there will be a clearer message arriving next week from the French gov, regarding what restrictions will be in place once the month long confinement period ends on December 1st.
