25/01/2020: Today's Updates... Day 45...

It has been a day of hazy sunshine here in Chatel, though the sunshine was strong enough to feel pleasantly mild and lower south facing slopes did soften and become a bit wetter this afternoon, with north facing areas retaining the chill and colder, drier snow conditions. The pistes remain in generally good shape, however...

The main news this evening is that the potential snowfall from Monday night to Wednesday is still on! Some charts continue to suggest a significant snow event is on the way, however, it is still a bit too soon to get excited, but - the potential is there. More on this on tomorrow morning's forecast update.

Although there is going to be plenty to discuss in the coming days regarding the period from Monday night to Wednesday morning, here are a couple of charts from the major models which sparked some interest this morning. The first chart is from the GFS operational run (00z) for the overnight 3rd to 4th February period, showing a wintry blast incoming and probably arriving by the 5th. The second chart is from this morning's ECMWF operational run and shows just about the opposite - though we can't see how things would pan out on subsequent days on this model.

The message therefore, is that there are possibilities as we head into February (as the GFS operational run suggests), however, at the moment, the balance of info, including model ensembles, suggests a mild first week of the new month. We'll keep an eye on whether the GFS scenario this morning is a total outlier, which is what we suspect, or whether it is picking up a signal for a change.
