25/11/2018: Today's Updates... 5.45pm...

5.45pm:

It's a bit early to be getting excited, but we have a few flakes of snow currently falling here in Chatel. Will update this eve if anything develops...

5.10pm:

A tour around parts of the ski area this afternoon... before taking a look at that, the local press are saying that the Forestiere piste, which is the relatively new one that connects Super Chatel to the lift station at Vonnes, will not be opening this season, due to slope stability issues...

Back to today's tour and firstly the reservoir at near Sous La Va is looking fairly full...

Down by the Combes chair, there was some reasonable cover and some decent sized man made snow mounds, but fresh snow cover was only in the vicinity of 10cm. The cloudier afternoon weather meant the snow underfoot was quite wet at these elevations...

Looking up the Queyset piste and again there was thin natural cover with some substantial mounds of man made...

The track to Plaine Dranse was OK in places, with a thin cover...

Looking up the Reine piste at Plaine Dranse... more snow required...

Big mounds at the snow factory... which continues its relentless dribble of snow.

Rochassons piste just below the snow factory... more snow required...

Work nearly finished at the bottom of the new Pierre Longue chairlift and the 6 man chairs are being fitted to the cable - but... more snow required...

The Stade at Linga, where there is some man made snow and a thin cover of natural snow higher up... more snow required...

So, what did we learn today?... well, conditions were generally as expected in terms of the amounts of natural snow and the man made snow which was made during the cold period earlier this week. Obviously there is currently not enough snow for anything to open down to Pre La Joux so it looks as though we will be relying on the snow and colder temperatures that are forecast early in the week, to bring any chance at all of some openings next weekend. Most models suggest modest amounts of snow during the first half of this week, though Meteo France is suggesting more. As was mentioned on the forecast page this morning, the forecast for this potential snow event has uncertainty written all over it, so it will be a case of fingers crossed and wait and see. This page will be updated very early tomorrow morning, so if the automated Meteo France forecast is on the right track, then we will have a good covering of snow by then, however, as other hi-res models suggest very little by the morning, do not be surprised if the news is underwhelming.

9.20am:

It is a chilly and frost start to the day here in Chatel and below are a couple of early morning views looking up to the summits. The snow forecast page was updated at 8am this morning and an update is expected on this page later, after a trip up into the mountains...

How you can help this season... you will notice on some pages that there is a PayPal tip/donation box, eg on the "About Us" page, where you can send us a tip, if you like what we are doing. There is no obligation to do so, but any donations will help the running costs of this site during the winter season.
