25/12/2018: Christmas Day Updates...

Day 11 Of The 2018/19 Chatel Ski Season:

Back at Snow Report HQ after an afternoon on the ski area...

In terms of the weather here in Chatel today, it has been a really beautiful day, with mostly blue skies and plenty of sunshine, after several days of wet weather. The views have been stunning.

In terms of snow conditions, conditions have been far more varied...

The piste maintenance crews had done a great job overnight and although we were not out until the afternoon, by all reports, the best snow was first thing this morning. During the day, the pistes became scraped and icy today, especially in steeper areas which have seen plenty of traffic. Particularly icy stretches that we witnessed were on Reine, Combes and Linga but his was the case in many other areas too. It was also busier than what would normally be expected for a Christmas Day. This is perhaps due to the bad weather on the days running up to today plus resorts such as La Chapelle and Abondance are closed - meaning more people are in the Chatel area.

So, over the coming days it looks like the ski area is going to be busy, and then get even busier for New Year week. Potentially, the early morning pistes will generally have the grippiest pistes after their overnight grooming, with perhaps a bit of softening in the afternoon on the sunniest slopes - but for much of the time, many pistes, especially the steeper ones, will continue to see these really scraped and icy stretches and will be rock hard.

Having witnessed several crashes today, 2 from people seemingly skiing too fast for their ability and for the conditions, it seems a good period to ski and board conservatively.

There is some better news this morning as temperatures across the area have dipped low enough for snow making to take place. The lights of the snow cannon can be seen on Linga early this morning.

We should have a couple of updates on this page today and the forecast page will be updated at approx. 7.45am as usual.

How you can help this season... you will notice on some pages that there is a PayPal tip/donation box, eg on the "About Us" page, where you can send us a tip, if you like what we are doing. There is no obligation to do so, but any donations will help the running costs of this site during the winter season. The more people who help, the better we can make this site.
