26/01/2020: Today's Updates... Day 46...
Piste conditions are holding up well in the Chatel ski area, which you could describe as being almost normal winter piste conditions, ie mostly good. We still have only a thin cover on the very lowest slopes, however, there is enough for almost all of the pistes and lifts to be open. With some great piste maintenance during the overnight period, there is more than enough to keep most people happy, though those who enjoy the fresh tracks, which are often a normal feature of a Chatel winter, are probably feeling slightly frustrated.
There were some flakes of snow falling in the village this afternoon, with the snow falling as low as 1100m at Linga for a time and this has brought a very light covering higher up on the ski area.
The good news late this afternoon, is that something far more interesting is on the way from later on tomorrow and through until Wednesday. As it stands, things are still looking good for the biggest snowfall since December, though the snowfall will be accompanied by some strong winds which may cause some lift disruption. There are are still quite a range of forecasts coming from the models regarding this snowfall, however, the overall picture does suggest that we have that chance of it being a significant one, which will be great news as we head into February. We'll know more about details such as snow/rain limits for the first part of this snowfall by tomorrow morning, so keep an eye on the forecast page.
At the moment, the snowfall looks like being followed by much milder air, so we are potentially looking at another wintry blip in a generally mild period.
Finally, although this is not for serious consideration, as it is only the signal we are interested in from this snowfall accumulation chart from the Arpege model - so ignore the detail... however it still thinks there is plenty of precipitation on the way.
Chart from www.meteociel.fr
Currently snowing lightly in the village and at 1100m at Linga.
Bonjour from Chatel. There is a bit more in the way of cloud overhead this morning, however, the clearer spells have allowed a temperature inversion to form in the area, with temperatures varying between 0C and -3C in the village and immediate valley area.
This morning's forecast is expected to be online today at approx 7.30am at: http://www.chatelweb.com/chatel_snow_forecast.php - and updates on this page will follow later in the day.
