29/12/2019: Today's Updates... Day 18...
The weather has been stunning here in Chatel today!
It was a cold start and once the early mist had cleared - some of it man made from the operation of snow cannon on the lower half of the ski area - the skies were blue this afternoon.
Reports from the pistes suggest the busy areas were fairly rammed, whereas the periphery of the ski area was much quieter. The mild sunshine did soften some pistes that were directly in its line of fire, however, the clear skies meant it was a day of contrasting snow conditions, with shaded areas remaining in the freezer and keeping colder, drier snow conditions. There was also plenty of harder snow knocking about, especially on the lower half of the ski area, though it was great to see that the Stade now has an open piste down it, all be it a rather icy one!
The air aloft is very mild, so the overnight refreezes are coming from radiative cooling of the snow pack and temperature inversions. Hopefully it will be cold enough again tonight to allow the cannon on the lower slopes to operate.
Looking ahead and there are no convincing signs of any significant snowfall in the next 7 to 10 days. High pressure is set to dominate, with the chance of an insignificant incursion of precipitation from the north on Saturday perhaps bringing a dusting, otherwise the outlook is anticyclonic. Some charts suggest some much colder air could affect the area in about a week's time which would allow much more snowmaking, however, at the moment any useful quantities of natural snow are off the agenda.
Here's a couple of photos from Saix this afternoon - a good place to escape the crowds.
Bonjour from Chatel. Overnight temperatures have been cold and it is currently -5.5c at our location in Chatel, with clear skies overhead and some valley mist drifting around. Snow cannon can be seen operating on the lower half of Linga and at Super Chatel, which is good news for the very lowest pistes, running down into the village and Linga.
